96年、当時人気絶頂であったオルタナティヴ・ロック・ユニット「スパイラル・ライフ」の活動休止を宣言。その後すぐさま、車谷浩司はAIRという名でソロ・キャリアをスタートさせる。
ミニ・アルバム『A・I・R』にてデビュー。以降、ジャズ／ハードコア・パンク／ミクスチャー・ラップ／パワーポップ——と多種多様なスタイルを貪欲に取り込み、AIR流ロックをストイックに追及している。また、ワカモノの心に巣食うニヒリズム、シニシズムを蹴散らすアツい言動およびアティテュードも魅力のひとつではないか。
