「ソウル音楽フリークなら一家に１枚！」的な名盤『スタンド・バイ・ユア・マン』（71年）などのヒットで知られるキャンディ・ステイトン。幼少期からのゴスペル体験をベースにシンガーとしてのキャリアをスタートさせた彼女は、68年に＜FAME＞よりデビューを果たした。前述の出世作『スタンド・バイ・ユア・マン』の表題曲は、もともとタミー・ワイネットのカントリー・ソングなのだが、その曲を大胆にもソウル風にアレンジ／解釈。そういうハイセンスっぷりに多くの聴き手が唸らされた。その後は“ライト＆メロウ”なメジャー路線に方向をシフト・チェンジし、音楽芸の幅をどんどん広げていくことに。また、ニューヨークで録音された「ホエン・ユー・ウェイク・アップ・トゥモロー」は傑作ダンス・チューンとして誉れ高い。
