大英帝国が誇るスーパー・ロック・グループ、ダイアー・ストレイツ。ボブ・ディラン、エリック・クラプトン、ローリング・ストーンズへのオマージュを80's的文脈でもって再構築したコンテンポラリー・ロックを得意としている。ここ日本ではまったくもって知名度が低いが、本国イギリスにおいては絶対的な存在だ。
77年、マーク・ノップラー（g）を中心に結成。翌78年に燻し銀のダンディ・ロック・アルバム『悲しきサルタン』でデビューを果たす。リリース当初はさして話題とならなかったが、精力的なプロモーション活動が功をそうし、79年に世界的なメガ・セールスを記録する。その後も着々とヒット作を飛ばしていく。そして85年にリリースされた『ブラザーズ・イン・アームス』が天文学的売上げをマーク。レジェンダリー・ロック・スターへの階段を駆け上がっていった。
