    歴史的名曲「虹の彼方に」——映画『オズの魔法使い』で、弱冠16歳にして主役をはったジュディ・ガーランドが歌うナンバーだ。映画と共に大ヒットしたこの歌で、一躍人気スターの座にかけあがった彼女。——今見てもメチャメチャかわいいッス。日本でいえば、美空ひばり級の実力を備えた清純アイドル。うーん、不世出の存在だろうなぁ。
    幼少の頃よりガム・シスターズとしてステージにあがっていたガーランドは、人を楽しませる精神をおのずと身に付け、以後63年まで多くのミュージカル／映画／ステージを重ねる。“ミス・ショウビジネス”の名は伊達ではない。その容姿からは想像出来ないほどのダイナミックな歌唱が特徴で、豊潤さ／迫力／歯切れ／説得力はピカイチ。男性ヴォーカルさえ力でねじ伏せてしまいそうだ。
    私生活もナカナカ派手で、生涯で５人の夫をもつ（２番目の夫ヴィンセント・ミネリとの子がライザ・ミネリだ）。また、感情の激しい性格であり、ストレスのために“薬づけ”の日々だったらしい。悲しくも69年、睡眠薬の飲みすぎのため、47歳の若さでこの世を去ってしまった。——しかし彼女が残した足跡は、アメリカ文化を代表する作品として後々まで語り継がれることは間違いないだろう。
