＜MOTOWN＞とともにデトロイトを代表する（した）レーベル＜INVICTUS／HOT WAX＞は、ソングライター・ティーム＝ホランド・ドジャー・ホランドが＜MOTOWN＞から独立後に設立したレーベルである。そこからはチェアメン・オブ・ザ・ボード、ハニー・コーンなど、70年代ノーザン・ソウルを代表するグループが数多く誕生した。
女性ソウル・シンガー＝ローラ・リーは60年代初期より音楽活動を開始、幾つかのヒット・ソングを放つが、本格的ブレイクを果たしたのは＜INVICTUS／HOT WAX＞所属期である。ゴスペルで培ったディープな唱法を伝家の宝刀とし、女性の自立を高らかに歌い上げた彼女は、“レディ・ソウル”としての地位を確立した。——「ウィメンズ・ラヴ・ライツ」（71年）、「リップ・オフ」（72年）などがスマッシュ・ヒット。「これぞノーザン・ソウル！」というべきソリッドなリズム・セクションの上で、ローラ・リーのダイナミックなヴォーカルが炸裂。また主張を思い切りぶつける姿勢は、多くの女性に奮起を促す結果になった。
