偉人ルイ・ジョーダンの蒔いた種が、ブルース、R＆B、ロックンロールとして花開き、やがてはファンクという大輪の黒い華も咲かせることになった。そして、その図々しくもヴァイタリティ溢れるエンターテイナー精神は、間違いなく、現在もブラック・ミュージック・シーンのなかに脈々と息づいている。
そんなルイの最大の功績といえば、それまでのスタンダードだったビッグ・バンド・スタイルを選択せず、革新的な少人数のコンボ編成を打ち出したことにある。シンプルになった分、バンド全員の音楽的ヴェクトルが定まりやすくなり、より濃縮されたサウンドを示せるようになったのだ。そして、その音楽のなかに日常的視点や軽妙洒脱なユーモア感覚を織り込み、より純度の高いエンターテインメントとして完成させたのである。またスモール・コンボならではといえる、それまでなかったスピード感が、ロックンロールに与えた影響も色濃い。
75年に逝ってしまった彼だが、その全盛期は40年代の＜DECCA＞時代で、通算19曲ものナンバーをヒット・チャートに送り込んでいる。
