「生涯一芸人」——を本人がモットーとしているかどうかは知らないが、エンターテインメントに対してあまりにも強い情熱を感じさせるブルース／R＆Bシンガー、ルーファス・トーマス。そのキャリアはかなり長く、40年代から歌手として活動を始め、初録音が50年。そして53年「ベアキャット」でブレイクを果たすことになった。また、60〜70年代にかけては＜STAX＞レーベルにおいて「ザ・ドッグ」、「ウォーキン・ザ・ドッグ」、「ドゥ・ザ・ファンキー・チキン」といった動物モノ（！）のダンス・ナンバーを立て続けにヒットさせたことでも鮮烈な印象を残している。
そんな彼の最大の持ち味／芸風は、歌、ダンス、コメディなどのさまざまな“芸能”をミックスした、総合エンターテイナーとしての見事な手腕にある。さらに古いブルースやノベルティ・ソングに息づいていた音楽感覚に、独自のファンク処理を施し、ダンス・ナンバーとして70年代に蘇らせた功績も大きい。
しかし“世界で最も老齢のティーンネイジャー”と呼ばれた彼も押し寄せる年波には打ち勝てず、01年心不全で他界。84歳だった。
