    Fred Neilフレッド・ニール

    グリニッジ・ヴィレッジ・フォーク・シーンのヒップ・スター。若き日のボブ・ディランに多大な影響を与えた人物としても知られる。しかし、何といってもその功績は、プロテスト・ソング一色だった60年代フォーク・シーンに、極めてパーソナルな視点で描かれた作品で一石を投じたことだろう。今日的なシンガー・ソングライター像を打ち出したことにより、フレッド・ニールは異彩を放ったのだ。
    また、初期から電気楽器を積極的に取り入れ、後のフォーク・ロックの雛型を作ったことでも有名であり、その浮遊するような音世界はすでにサイケデリアを体現していたともいえる。考えてみれば、60〜70年代ロック・シーンは、スティーヴン・スティルス／デヴィッド・クロスビー／ティム・バックリー／ラヴィン・スプーンフル／ジェシ・コリン・ヤング／ジェファーソン・エアプレイン……といった、いわゆるフレッド・ニールズ・チルドレンで埋め尽くされていることに気付くだろう。
    01年７月７日、天に召される。享年64歳。
