昨今のフリー・ソウル人気によってか、“メロウ大王”なる呼び名で表されるリオン・ウェア。ミニー・リーパートンとのデュエット「イフ・アイ・エヴァー・ルーズ・ズィス・ヘヴン」（75年）や、リオンが作曲しマイケル・ジャクソンが歌った「アイ・ワナ・ビー・ホエア・ユー・アー」（71年）は、クラブ・クラシック曲として今でも耳にすることが多い。
60年代初期より＜MOTOWN＞のソングライターとして活動を始めたリオンだが、初めて脚光を浴びたのは、マーヴィン・ゲイの『アイ・ウォント・ユー』（76年）によって。リオンのソロ用作品のデモ・テープを耳にしたマーヴィンがそれを気に入り、なんと全曲を採用。さらにリオンはプロデューサーとしても大活躍、同作をソフィスティケイトされたベッド・サイド・ソウルの傑作に仕上げた。
ソロ・アーティストとしては、72年にアルバム『リオン・ウェア』でデビュー。以降、裏『アイ・ウォント・ユー』的な『ミュージカル・マッサージ』（76年）やブラック・コンテンポラリー色の強い『インサイド・イズ・ラヴ』（79年）をリリース。80年代に入ると、さらにメロウ＆アーバンなセンスに磨きをかけて『ロッキン・ユー・エターナリー』（81年）、『夜の恋人たち』（82年）といったAOR寄りの作品群を発表した。
しかし、なんといってもリオンが持つ才覚が最大限に発揮されるのは、サウンド・クリエイターとして、である。彼がプロデュースを手がけたメリサ・マンチェスターやシリータらの作品群で、そのメロウ・センスをタップリと堪能することができる。
