    激しく強烈なスラッシュ・メタルで彼らがシーンに登場した時、やり過ぎだとか、メタルは行き着くところまで行ってしまったという批評が飛び交った。アンプ限界ギリギリのディストーションと急速なスピードはまるでカミソリの豪雨のように鋭く、アルバムの１曲１曲からは恐怖、暴力そして暗黒の世界を表現しようとする意気込みがまざまざと感じられた。その後、メタルはさらにスピードを増し狂暴で攻撃的になっていったが、極限を超越した速度といかにも不気味な不協和音を巧みに構成したスレイヤーのサウンドは他に類を見ない。売れるために自分の音を変えるなど問題外だという彼らは、ゴア系デス・メタル、メタルコア、そしてブラック・メタルのパイオニア的存在として現在でも崇拝され続けている。
